    This article examines James Harrington's book, The Commonwealth of Oceana. The aim of the book was to demonstrate that England was ripe for republican government and to provide a blueprint for the type of republic that ought to be adopted. Harrington's account, contemporary responses to Oceana, Harrington's other works, and Harrington's legacy are discussed.
